Venezuela- Wealthiest Country in South America turns into one of the Poorest Countries Before the late 1980s and into the 1990s, Venezuela was one of the wealthiest countries in South America. After a few wrong turns, they elected President Hugo Chavez, who sent the country of Venezuela into a downward spiral. Shortly after he was elected as president, he turned Venezuela into a socialistic society. Since then, millions have tried to flee the country and find their way of life back again. “Socialism not only takes away from people the access to basic food and medicines but also creates an environment in which life is not worth nothing.” (Giannina Raffo) Giannina Raffo was an individual who fled from Venezuela and was under the control of the socialistic form of government.
